Balancing Oil and Moisture

Balancing Oil and Moisture

The Essentials for Healthy Skin: Balancing Oil and Moisture

While many people recognise the importance of moisture, they often underestimate the role of oil. A lack of moisture can lead to excessive dead skin cells and reduced skin elasticity. At this time, an appropriate oil barrier is essential to prevent moisture evaporation, thereby preventing wrinkles and aging.

Healthy skin maintains a slightly acidic pHtypically around 4.5 to 5.5. This acidic environment protects itself from harmful external substances, bacterial growth, and inflammation.

Meanwhile, the skin barrier, also known as the stratum corneum, includes this acid mantle but also consists of other components like dead skin cells and lipids that work together to protect the skin. When the balance of oil and moisture is disrupted, the skin barrier can break down, leading to various skin issues such as dryness, itching, flakiness, skin troubles, and acne.

What Does Each Skin Type Lack?

Dry Skin

Dry skin lacks both oil and moisture. This type is prone to dead skin cells and wrinkles. The skin surface appears dull, and moisture evaporates easily, making the skin rough and less elastic. Special attention must be given to moisturising care. After replenishing moisture, it is important to apply products rich in oil, such as oils or creams, to form an oil barrier.

Tip: Choose a gentle cleanser that doesn't strip off the skin, and remove dead skin cells once or twice a week.

Oily Skin

Oily skin has an excess of oil compared to moisture. This type of skin is more elastic and ages more slowly than dry skin but may have larger pores and be prone to skin troubles such as acne. Excessive sebum production can occur as the skin tries to compensate for a lack of moisture, so if you experience tightness, don’t forget to replenish moisture as well.

Tip: Focus on removing sebum and impurities, but avoid over-cleansing as it can stimulate the sebaceous glands. Choose moisturising products with less oil content or with sebum-controlling functions.

Maintaining the balance of oil and moisture is the foundation of effective skincare. Protect and enhance your skin’s health by tailoring your routine to match your skin type.
