There is a significant and often overlooked distinction between a pure essential oil and the wide array of products sold under that name. No matter how appealing the aroma, reconstituted products and chemical copies of natural essenses, often listed as Parfum on an ingredient label, do not function for therapeutic purposes. They may smell right. They do not work in the same way.


The market for essential oils has expanded dramatically, and with that growth has come a proliferation of substitutes such as reconstitutions, nature-identicals, isolates, perfume compounds, and aromatic blends. In law, many of these products fall under the broad heading of "essential oils," which can be genuinely confusing.
